PUNE: A research by researchers at Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) has revealed that an interaction of local weather components, strikingly much like these affecting modern-day monsoons, doubtless led to the collapse of the Indus Valley civilisation over 4,000 years in the past via lengthy droughts.
Analysing historic cave formations (speleothems) from Gupteswar and Kadapa caves in south India, the research discovered how lowered photo voltaic radiation, El Nino, southward migration of Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and a damaging part of Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) collectively weakened the monsoon, triggering the downfall of the traditional civilisation.The research has been revealed in Quaternary Worldwide journal.
