Food Safety Commissioner issues advisory on Packaged Drinking Water/Mineral Water

The Commissioner of Food Safety and security has provided a consultatory to suppliers of Packaged Drinking Water/Mineral Water to get the BIS (Bureau of Indian Requirements) Accreditation Mark.

Manufacturers of Packaged Drinking Water be it MSME or Large Scale are called for to obtain License of BIS and is a pre-condition to publish the BIS Certificate while obtaining FSSAI License/Registration, it mentioned.

The advisory stated, “Whereas, under Regulation 2.3.14 (17) and (18) of Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction for sale) Regulations, 2011, states that “No individual will make, sell or exhibit available, Packaged Drinking Water (PDW) and Mineral Water (MW) except under the Bureau of Indian Standards Certification Mark (BIS)”. Additionally, as per Section 31 of FSS Act, 2006, all Food Business Operators have to obtain License/Registration before beginning of any type of food service, it included.

Packaged Drinking water can be packed in bottles/Pet Jars including 20 Litre Jars.

As necessary, the complying with treatment is laid down by FSSAI for thinking about the application for issuance of FSSAI License in case of manufacturers of PDW and MW;

  • FBO will have to mandatorily upload copy of BIS permit or duplicate of letter showing recording of application for BIS License at the time of requesting brand-new license for PDW and MW from FSSAI on the online system of FoSCoS.
  • After getting BIS License, the FBO shall furnish its details in on the internet Annual Return offered in FoSCoS..
  • BIS certificate shall be necessary document while getting renewal of permit.
  • In case of closure of being rejected of application for certificate by BIS, the FBO shall educate the concerned Licensing Authority and the FSSAI application/license is reliant be rejected/suspended/cancelled.

The Commission has warned that failure to conform will attract charge under section 58 and 63 of Food Safety & Standards Act’ 2006.
