BJP veteran Jagdambika Pal to head 31-MP JPC on Waqf Bill | India News – Times of India



NEW DELHI: Senior BJP Lok Sabha member Jagdambika Pal was on Tuesday named chairperson of the joint committee of Parliament (JPC), which is able to study the contentious Waqf (Modification) Invoice.
A Lok Sabha notification stated Speaker Om Birla appointed Pal as the top of the 31-member committee.
Amid protests by the opposition in Lok Sabha on its provisions, govt had determined to refer the invoice to a joint committee of the 2 Homes.
The joint panel has 31 members – 21 from Lok Sabha and 10 from Rajya Sabha – and can submit its report by the subsequent session.
The 73-year-old Pal is a fourth-term MP from Dumariyaganj in jap Uttar Pradesh and is seen as a lawmaker who enjoys heat cross-party relations.
Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on final Friday adopted a movement moved by Union minority affairs minister Kiren Rijiju, who additionally holds the parliamentary affairs portfolio, naming the members to be a part of the committee.
In Decrease Home, 12 members of the panel are from the ruling Nationwide Democratic Alliance (NDA), together with eight from BJP, and 9 from the opposition. In Higher Home, 4 are from BJP, 4 from the opposition, one from YSRCP, which has opposed the invoice, and one is a nominated member.
The Invoice was launched within the Lok Sabha on final Thursday and referred to a joint committee of Parliament after a heated debate, with govt asserting the proposed legislation didn’t intend to intervene with the functioning of mosques and the opposition calling it focusing on of Muslims and an assault on the Structure.
The committee has been requested to submit its report back to Lok Sabha by the final day of the primary week of the subsequent session, Rijiju stated.
