AHMEDABAD: IIM Ahmedabad has introduced it’s going to implement the govt-mandated reservation coverage in its PhD admissions, marking the primary time the premier B-school will apply the quota for SCs, STs, OBCs and individuals with disabilities in its doctoral programme that began in 1971.
The web announcement for the PhD programme subtly notes: “Govt of India pointers for reservation are adopted throughout admissions.” Earlier, 62-year-old IIM-A had no reserved seats for under-represented communities for its PhD course, often known as the Fellow Programme in Administration.
Hailed as a landmark transfer, this comes after sustained efforts by SC/ST activists and a PIL filed by International IIM Alumni Community in Gujarat HC in 2021. The PIL sought HC’s intervention to implement the reservation provisions at IIM-A, claiming that 10 different IIMs had already carried out the quota of their doctoral programmes. In response, IIM-A filed an affidavit in Oct 2023, indicating that it could implement the reservation coverage for the 2025 consumption.
The initiative was spearheaded by activists Anil Wagde, Suraj Yengde, Arun Khobragade and others beginning in 2017 after they met the then director Errol D’Souza. “On the time, they’d no quantification of what number of from these courses made it to IIM-A. You can not management what you can’t measure. We thus filed a PIL, declaring the violation of constitutional provisions, the Central Instructional Establishments (Reservation in Admission) Act, and UGC norms,” stated Wagde, an IIM Calcutta alumnus. Wagde celebrated the announcement as a serious victory. “We hope IIM-A retains its phrase. We’ll monitor the method and can search particulars of the admission as soon as the method is full.”
IIM-A has not but offered particular particulars on the way it will implement the quota.
