NEW DELHI: Bangladesh‘s interim authorities on Saturday withdrew its ban on the export of Hilsa fish to India and introduced that it’s going to export 3,000 tonnes of Hilsa throughout the upcoming Durga Puja pageant, which can happen from October 9 to 13.
The Muhammad Yunus-led interim authorities earlier this month imposed a ban on hilsa exports to India to make sure ample home provide.
“In opposition to the backdrop of appeals by the exporters, approval has been given to export 3,000 tonnes of hilsa fish (to India), fulfilling the precise situations on the event of the upcoming Durga Puja,” the Bangladeshi commerce ministry mentioned in a press release.
In 2023, Bangladesh granted permission to 79 corporations to export a complete of 4,000 tonnes of hilsa fish to India, aligning with the Durga Puja pageant, in response to official sources.
Earlier this month, India’s Fish Importers Affiliation reached out to Bangladesh overseas affairs adviser Touhid Hossain, urging him to allow the export of hilsa to India throughout Durga Puja. In a letter dated September 9, the Affiliation’s secretary, Syed Anwar Maqsood, highlighted that though Bangladesh applied a ban on hilsa export in 2012, the nation has been permitting restricted exports from the primary week of September till the tip of the Durga Puja pageant for the previous 5 years as a gesture of goodwill.
Because the main international producer of hilsa, Bangladesh sometimes imposes restrictions on the export of this fish to fulfill the excessive home demand. Nevertheless, throughout the Durga Puja festivities, the nation often eases the export ban on hilsa.
The follow of permitting hilsa exports to India between September and October annually, as a gesture of goodwill, had been a long-standing custom below the earlier Awami League authorities, led by the deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
